Our Packaging Journey

As some of you may be aware we are a company that aims to put not only delicious food but also the environment at the top of our agenda.

One of the reasons we operate as a 100% vegan company is of course to protect our lovely planet, there are several key ways in which we to strive to do this:

  1. We use entirely plant-based foods and ingredients; we do not support the animal agricultural industry, proven to be of the most detriment to our planet.

  2. We are actively trying to minimise our use of plastics wherever possible through bulk ordering of ingredients to minimise the plastic packaging we receive.

  3. We work with Vegware and now Biopak, who offer 100% plastic-free plant-based packaging, in serving all of our dishes for delivery.

  4. We aim to use as much organic produce as we possibly can, to avoid those nasty pesticides and chemicals.

  5. We make about 90% of our food in house to ensure that we are providing non-processed, nutrition-rich, wholesome dishes, and avoiding numerous and unnecessary preservatives, gmo, msg and artificial colourings and flavourings.

As a 100% vegan company, we are acutely aware of the issues caused by plastic and as such we are always reviewing and looking for new and innovative ways to cause less damage and actually help the planet recover. Recently we’ve dedicated time to reviewing our packaging choices and we’ve come to several conclusions.

When we started Veganushi nearly 3 years ago, we decided to use Vegware, a plant based packaging solution designed to be commercially compostable with food waste.

Vegware is made entirely from plants using renewable, lower carbon, recycled or reclaimed materials, and we were safe in the knowledge that these sustainability benefits still applied no matter what happened to Vegware products after use; whether they were recycled or not. We were content in the fact that Vegware products don't produce nasty chemicals when placed with general waste in landfill, and if products were to end up being incinerated, we knew that they produced no volatile gases and left little-to-no residue.

We supported Vegware who informed us that they were working with waste management companies to try to increase the number of industrial composters available in the UK, and hoped that at some point we would be able to provide a drop off point for our customers with their used packaging to be collected for a industrial compost pickup.

Sadly, this still hasn't happened in our delivery areas and we have therefore decided to look for other ways to improve our packaging.

So, after some dedicated research hours, and a few sample packagings later, we are super happy to announce that we have made the decision to switch the majority of our packaging to Biopak!

Biopak create 100% plant-based biodegradable packaging made from sugar cane, entirely decomposable without the need for a commercial composter, meaning it can even be done by you guys at home! Just treat it exactly like you would cardboard in your home composter - if you don't have one at home, don't worry, just pop the dirty food packaging into your food waste bin and it’s as simple as that.

With Biopak, we feel that Veganushi is now able to offer our customers an entirely guilt-free takeaway, and we feel proud that we’ve gone one step further in making Veganushi an entirely ethical, sustainable, and pro-planet takeaway choice for our conscious customers: we’ve done the work so you don’t have to.

We feel really excited about this big step forward for us in our fight against packaging pollution, plastic waste, and in our ongoing mission to protect the planet and reduce our environmental impact as a small vegan family-run business.

So, sometime soon you guys will start to see some of our familiar dishes arriving in our brand new sugar cane tubs! The shapes might be slightly different, but rest assured that the volume of food is the same, we’ve tested that too.

We genuinely really appreciate your guys’ feedback on anything that we do at Veganushi, so if you find any issues with these new changes, or just want to ask us questions about what we do and how we could do it better, please feel free to drop us a message anytime! We’re always looking to discover the newest companies and technologies in pro-planet, plastic-free packaging, so don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us know of any you’ve been impressed by.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read about our behind-the-scenes efforts in trying to make our planet a better place to live, and to all you guys, our loyal customers, for supporting us in our quest, you guys rock. X
